This is the marketing report for Insights and More for mens cosmetic market research. The metaphor is a football game – we’re comparing different brands and their markets as football teams, each team has their own star players, their uniforms and their formula. I enjoy the idea a lot and I think it’s an interesting way to present a market report.

The mockup was done in Photoshop, and then sliced and imported into Flash, where I added in the animations and Actionscript to simulate a soccer game. We even thought about adding sound effects like people wowing in a football stadium. It’s great fun.

I wish I could show more of the screens here but I can’t reveal too much of their market report due to confidentiality issues.

The client approached me for his own Mens apparel online shopping business. We’ve been talking about this for a long time and he really needs my 100% effort on this. I would love to as well as it’s an exciting project to work on. I was thinking about a clean/neat, user-friendly interface at the beginning, something like this.

However, this site seems to be too plain, simple, just another online shopping site, nothing eye-catchy. Therefore I came up with a second version.

Well I like this one better. And the client said he wants something more old-fashioned, more vintage look. Because this website is going to offer tailored customized hand-made suits, and it offers measurement guide, or even measurement services. Therefore I designed the last version.

It’s great design experience for me. Although in the end the client’s programming requirements are beyond me – he requires highly customized functionalities for the shop which needs a whole bunch of programmers working for months. I tried my best exploring opportunies with osecommerce and other platforms but in the end I suggested him to go for a web programmer team and refunded him all the deposit.

I still love this design a lot though

Singapore EDB 50th anniversary exhibition website design and Joomla! development

This EDB 50th anniversary exhibition website is designed based on EDB 50th anniversary website main site. I made a few changes, including adding in the frontpage slideshow and bottom modules etc. The slideshow used to be less wide but the client wanted it to be wider like the current one.

I turned the approved design into a Joomla! template which makes it easy to manage the website content. I also provided a free training for some EDB staffs to manage the site.

I’m also in charge of the website hosting/domain management, website maintenance, content management etc. Including updating the website content and news & media.

Terrific Mentors WordPress site design and theming

I was cooperating with Tania Chew from Word of Art on this project and she’s the one who manages the content and liaised with the client. Thanks her for her good work so I can concentrate on working at the design and development of the theme.

Actually the final design is quite different than my original ideas and the client wanted it this way (tangled man etc), and added in so many stuffs at the end, such as the top right area which looks kinda crowded. Well, I think every designer will learn (in their own way) that client is always right

The project not only included WordPress theme design and development, but also PHPList newsletter installation and configuration. PHPList is a tool that I’d never worked with before, and it’s a free solution for newsletters. It looked quite outdated to me though, and not customizable in many ways. I would recommend Mailchimp still for this kinda services. For free solutions I’d go for any kind of WordPress plugins, I believe there must be some plugins which can get the job done neatly.

The website also includes Twitter and Youtube integration.

This project had been going on for a long while and I’m glad finally me and Tania have pulled this through together. Great teamwork it is. Tania has been my lifesaver in a lot of ways and I look forward to working with her again on some cool project in the near future.

The whole process of the designing and developing this website is like the breeze. Perhaps it’s because of the fact that the client is a fashion designer, so it’s easier to communicate on the concept of the website, especially on the aesthetic aspect. This is a website with several new articles everyday and there’s going to be a lot of visitors, and it’s highly content based, so I’ve made the content the key stuffs of this website, and tried to make navigations easy for the visitors, so that it’s easier for them to find the articles that they’re interested in the most.

Since it’s so content based and what we’re looking to sell is the content, it’s important that we link it up with social networks. So I’ve suggested the clients to add in social sharing functions at the end, and display their facebook fans and like buttons etc. I also gained experiences on the connection between Facebook and WordPress in the meantime.

Insights and More - Knowledge Creation page redesign/development

This is a website revamp project. The main section I had worked in is the “Who We Are” section – we were to divide it into “Consumer & Market Insights” and “Knowledge Creation” pages, although there are other changes applied throughout the site. I needed to tweak their layout to be more user friendly and well structured, enable file downloading, and recode the right sidebar section to display more information as well.

This is the first time I’ve ever worked on a Textpattern website (or even heard of it…). Actually I wasn’t aware that the website is using Textpattern even after I signed the design agreement with client because I’d been told it’s using WordPress. I was a bit surprised at first but I’m never a person who’s afraid of learning new things, and it turns out to be not so difficult for me to learn given the variety of CMS/forum/other platforms that I had been working with.

It’s a very flexible templating system and you’re free to customize any part of the website as a designer. The downside would be it’s using Textile markup and it could be less efficient. And the whole “uploading an image through images tab and go back to your article and include that image” process is time-consuming. It’ll be so much easier if you could upload your image to your article right away. Oh and files as well.

So if I’m to develop a new website for a client I won’t suggest Textpattern but anyway it’s a good experience for me to learn something new.

Kelvin, a Co-founder of the brilliant online application JamiQ.com and a supportive friend of mine came to me saying he needs some tweaks on their website, so I got to have the chance to work with the friendly crew from JamiQ – Benjamin, Michael and Arvind. Michael even helped me install Python/django and gitX remotely on my machine so I can work on my local copy. The whole work process with all these useful tools is such a breeze!!

I was already very intrigued when the first time I learned about the version tracking tools, not to mention when I had the chance to finally lay my hands on it. It works so great and save me a lot of time and hassle! FTPs are so ’00s!! In this way you can not only submit all the changes you made, but also easily revert back to a pervious version if anything goes wrong without breaking the code. It’s faster and more efficient than I could ever imagine.

It also provide me an opportunity to take a closer look at Python/Django. Although my previous project Chalkboard is also based on Python/Django, I didn’t have a chance to look into its template because there were some issues getting it running on my machine. Again thanks to Michael Lim who made it possible for me. The template codes were so clean and neat that it almost took no time for me to start working on it.

• Cooperating with the fantastic crew of Proteus Tech, a team of Python Django developers to tweak the design and codes.

This should be counted the very first project I’ve ever done in Singapore since I set up the business. It’s for a mobile application called Chalkboard. It’s with a relatively tight budget but it’s a good starting point for me. Thanks to Andy who introduced me to Bernard for this project and thanks to Bernard who gave me this chance. It’s a great experience which allows me to learn a lot through the whole process, especially in a client handling and team working prospective.

There’s been a lot of tweaks after I had done the page design and coding, therefore it’s only gone live not long ago. I’m impressed by the work that Proteus Tech has done, I’m happy for the success of the App chalkboard, and I feel so delightful to be a part of this. Good luck Chalkboard!!
